Secret Formula for Job Interview Confidence

Here is the step-by-step formula that gives you job interview confidence.

Every day people describe how they lack the confidence needed to clearly describe their experience so they can secure the position they desire. They have the required experience but don’t feel confident when interviewers ask about specific situations. They’re asking you to tell them a structured story that highlights your talents.

If you know the questions in advance and how to tell a structured story, then you’ll naturally feel confident describing your experience.

Opening Phase

During the first 10 minutes of the interview, you will be asked one or more of the following questions:

At the start of the interview, you will be asked;

  • What do you know about our company?
  • What motivated you to apply?
  • Tell me about yourself.

For each of these questions, write out your response and practice saying it to yourself and then to a friend. To learn about handling each of these question go to https://www.interviewmastery.com/

Closing Phase

During the last 10 minutes of the interview, you will be asked:

  • Do you have any questions?
  • What are your compensation requirements?

For each of these questions, write out your response and practice saying it to yourself and then to a friend. To learn about handling each of these question go to https://www.interviewmastery.com/

Middle Phase

The middle phase of the interview I call “Dialogue.” This is when you are asked to describe situations where you demonstrated specific skills required for the position. These skills are listed on the job description.

Now ask an AI tool like Claude to make a list of questions based on the job description.

Ask Claude: “Generate a list of seven interview questions using the attached job description.”

For each interview question during the middle phase, write down a story from your experience that demonstrates the skills they are seeking. Use the following four-step formula to structure your stories. This is called the STAR Method that has been successfully used for decades.

  • Situation: “The situation was that I was responsible for …”
  • Task: “My tasks were to …”
  • Action: “To achieve the results required I did the following …”
  • Results: “The final results were …”

Now you know the questions you will be asked during the Opening, Middle, and Closing phases of every interview. And you have written out your responses for each question.

Now practice responding to each question first to yourself then to a friend.
